It’s one of the most frequent questions we are asked.
We are all born with beautiful, blemish free skin. However, as we age, it’s natural for darker spots to appear. This is known as hyperpigmentation which is caused by an increase in melanin, although many of us simply refer to it as ‘skin pigmentation’.
In the past, there wasn’t much that could be done about pigmentation other than trying to cover it up with makeup. Luckily a great deal has changed in recent years.
At ACSS we use a revolutionary treatment program to help remove skin pigmentation.
So what is our answer when asked about treating skin pigmentation?
It’s Cosmelan®. The world’s leading professional depigmentation treatment.
What is Cosmelan®?
Cosmelan® is a non-invasive, two-step professional depigmenting method that removes existing skin spots and prevents their reappearance, giving both short and long term results.
It is a pioneering treatment in the field of skin depigmentation to treat the most severe and resistant skin blemishes.
Although often referred to as a peel, the Cosmelan® treatment goes beyond that. Unlike peels, which act on the surface, this program gets to the root of the problem.
Cosmelan eliminates and attenuates spots and most importantly provides a regulating action correcting the overproduction of pigmentation to help prevent the spots from reappearing.
While peels act on the surface of the problem, the Cosmelan® treatment targets the origin.
Our team has been exclusively trained and certified by the distributor Mesoestetic and we are officially recognised as a specialised depigmentation clinic.
Treating skin pigmentation with Cosmelan®
Cosmelan® is praised around the world for being more effective than laser or skin needling and is now regarded by many as the best way to treat skin pigmentation.
Cosmelan® is ideal for any skin type.
We have had amazing results with clients who have visited us for this treatment.
Before and after pictures show noticeable changes so it’s no wonder this treatment is a world leader in depigmentation.
Treatment for skin pigmentation: Your experience
Cosmelan® is a 2 phase process that combines an in-clinic treatment with a home care regimen necessary to achieve optimal results and is ideal for almost any skin type.
It is important to have a full consultation with one of our therapists at ACSS before commencing your treatment to make sure it is right for you.
After your initial consultation it is recommended to begin using the Brightening Peel Booster for 4 weeks prior to your Cosmelan® treatment.
A prep treatment is performed 2 weeks prior to having Cosmelan® and is essential for preparing your skin for your treatment.
This takes approximately 30 mins and there is no down time after this prep phase.
When you visit the salon for your Cosmelan® treatment your skin will be cleansed before the product is applied to your face like a regular face mask. Then you’ll head home with instructions to remove the mask after a set amount of time (between 8-12 hours) depending on your skin type.
Your skin may feel tight and a little uncomfortable in the week following your appointment. There may also be some peeling and redness, plus an itching or burning sensation and some slight swelling is also quite common. Most people who have experienced Cosmelan® say the symptoms are quite mild.
Once the mask is removed and after the peeling and redness has settled down, you’ll keep up with a new skincare routine, using special products given to you by your therapist.
Winter is the perfect time to have your Cosmelan® treatment although you can have it at any time of the year. Consider working it in with your schedule so you don’t find yourself attending any social events or being out in bright sunlight without a wide brimmed hat when your skin is still red and sensitive.
Other uses for Cosmelan®
Cosmelan® is also effective in helping to reduce acne scarring and to smooth fine lines while helping to improve your skin’s overall texture in addition to being a treatment for skin pigmentation.
What causes skin pigmentation?
Other factors that play a role in causing skin pigmentation are:
- Genetic predisposition
- Inflammatory processes
- Hormonal Factors
- Ageing
- Solar radiation
- Photosensitising medication
- Exposure to chemical agents
The most common skin spots are:
- Melasma: Also known as chloasma, they are irregular, brown spots of hormonal origin that can be enhanced by sun exposure.
- Solar o senile lentigo: These different coloured spots are caused by the combination of skin ageing and sun exposure.
- Ephelides: The typical congenital freckles increase with age, but also become more visible when exposed to the sun.
Is Cosmelan® the best way to remove skin pigmentation?
Cosmelan® is tested and proven to be safe on almost any skin type.
Results are noticeable after just one week and unlike some other treatments it doesn’t require multiple appointments to be effective and is completely non-invasive.
It really is an excellent option for anyone looking to minimise the appearance of skin pigmentation.
